Traditionally the health sector tends to adopt poor practices when it comes to pain management and injury recovery. Most likely, if you go to the doctor with back pain you will be prescribed some analgesics or maybe a massage alleviating the symptoms, yet not treating the root cause of the pain. When we get injured playing sports or doing physical activity, often we just get asked not to move a lot, rest, and maybe some physiotherapy sessions which in some situations will help tissue healing, but we don’t work on recovering the functionality of the injured part at all.

Most amateur athletes go on the traditional way of, getting injured and just resting. Maybe even getting some first-phase rehab and intervening early in the injury recovery. Nevertheless, they are missing the crucial phase of the recovery, the readaptation to sport and physical activity. Real sports rehabilitation takes into account the function that has been impaired due to injury. For this reason, after the structures are healed we need to train to recover the same functionality we had prior to the injury, to then even progress to better performance.

Sports Prehab

The main goal of physical therapy and sports rehabilitation is first to recover the individual, then make sure the individual doesn’t get injured again, and finally get to the same point before the injury or even better. Then it’s the prehab that comes into place, after recovering functionality we have to work on injury prevention and improving overall performance through functional training, strength training, and specific sports training.
